Generic displays error E02: Brake applied

Low severity When convenient

Can I ride home with this error?

Usually safe to ride. Safe to ride if the brakes work normally.

What it means

The brake cut-off switch is telling the controller to stop the motor. This is normal while braking. If it stays on, a brake lever or its sensor may be stuck. On generic displays the meaning of a code depends on the controller's communication protocol; this meaning is from the display maker's manual for this protocol.

Likely causes

  • Brake lever pulled
  • Lever not springing back
  • Brake sensor or connector fault

Symptoms

  • E02 shows
  • No assist or throttle

How to fix it

  1. Let go of both brake levers.
  2. Check each lever springs back fully.
  3. Check the brake sensor connectors are pushed fully in.
  4. Switch the bike off, wait 10 seconds and switch it on again.
  5. If the code stays, take the bike to your dealer or an e-bike repair shop.
